To the Editor: In regards my use of the nickname "Satchmo," I intended, along with the illustration of the point in the essay, to point out that there is no justification for the stereotype. Although the sentence is in the form of a question, I thought it pretty clear that there was no criterion for thinking the generic Jane had no rhythm when Satchmo did, except prejudice against her -- that is, our "feelings" for rhythm.
